The holiday season is a time for celebration, family gatherings, and plenty of delicious food. But for dog owners, it can also bring challenges that require special attention to ensure their four-legged family members stay safe and comfortable. From decorations to festive foods, there are many things to keep in mind to avoid holiday mishaps. Here are some essentials that we often don’t think about but they can be a lifesaver and keep your dog safe during the holidays.
1. Watch Out for Dangerous Foods
Holiday food is tempting, but many of the foods we enjoy can be harmful or even toxic to dogs. Common foods to avoid during the holidays include:
- Chocolate: Chocolate, especially dark and baking chocolate, contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
- Desserts & Sweets: They often contain xylitol (a sugar substitute) which is very toxic to pets.
- Grapes and Raisins: Can cause kidney failure in dogs.
- Onions and Garlic: Found in many holiday dishes, these can lead to anemia in dogs.
- Bones: Cooked bones can splinter and pose choking hazards or internal injuries.
- Seasoned Meat: Certain herbs and spices we use are toxic to dogs and can cause an upset stomach and vomiting.
Tip: Keep all food out of your dog’s reach and ensure guests know not to feed your pet table scraps.
2. Create a Safe Space
With guests coming and going, the holidays can be overwhelming for dogs. A designated safe space for your dog can help them feel secure during the holidays:
- Crates: If your dog is crate-trained, their crate can be a perfect retreat during busy times. Ensure the crate is comfortable and stocked with their favorite toys and a blanket.
- Quiet Room: Alternatively, set up a quiet room where your dog can relax away from the noise and activity.
Tip: If you’re not familiar with crate training, check out our guide on how to get started- HERE or start crate training right away on our app.
3. Maintain a Routine
Dogs thrive on routine, and the chaos of the holidays can disrupt their schedule. Try to:
- Stick to regular feeding times.
- Ensure your dog gets their usual walks and exercise because tiring them out with physical activity before any events, like having guests over, can reduce their restlessness.
- Spend quality time with your dog, even if your schedule is busy.
Tip: Incorporating regular play sessions can help alleviate stress for both you and your dog.
4. Plan for Fireworks and Loud Noises
The holidays often include fireworks and loud celebrations, which can be stressful for dogs. To keep them calm and safe:
- Ensure a closed space: Close all doors, windows, and gates are closed to prevent escape.
- Use GPS: Add a tracker to your dogs collar in case they get spooked and bolt.
- Provide Distractions: Offer puzzle toys or chew items to keep their mind occupied.
- Play White Noise: A fan or background music can help drown out loud noises outside.
5. Traveling for the Holidays
If you’re traveling during the holidays, plan ahead, make sure you pack the essentials and practice secure transport using a crate, pet seatbelt, or hammock. If your dog can’t join you on a trip, research the best options for boarding. Some good options can be:
- Boarding Kennels: When choosing a boarding kennel be sure to visit yourself. Keep an eye out on the number of staff they have vs. the number of dogs they accept, look at how clean the facility is, the systems they use, and make sure to check out third-party reviews online.
- Pet Sitters: To choose the right sitter for your dog, your dog and they have to meet first to ensure this person is familiar to your dog and that they feel comfortable with each other. Research people with experience and arrange meet & greets a few times before leaving your dog with them.
Enjoy a Safe and Happy Holiday Season
The holidays are a special time to share with loved ones, including your dog. By taking these precautions, you can create a safe and enjoyable environment for your furry friend. Remember, a little planning goes a long way in ensuring your dog is safe and stays healthy throughout the holidays.
Happy holidays from the Dogit team!
